First part of the report on the R&D project “Environmental Innovation Policy: more efficient resource use and climate protection through sustainable material use of biomass”. This publication was produced as part of the UBA project “Environmental innovation policy - more efficient resource use and climate protection through sustainable material use of biomass” and provides an overview of the available basic data for material use in Germany, Europe and worldwide.
With nearly 300 participants from 21 countries and 30 exhibitors, the 4th German WPC Congress held in Cologne (13th-14th December 2011) once more lived up to its reputation as the industry's leading European event. Organiser nova-Institut and sponsors Reifenhäuser, Werzalit, STAEDTLER and BASF (Innovation Prize) expressed enormous satisfaction, and the sector remains extremely upbeat.
The private research and consultant nova-Institute, based in Huerth (Germany), and the French Competitiveness Cluster Industries and Agro-Resources (IAR) in Laon (France) have signed a partnership agreement involving services to develop a bio-based economy, to give their subscribers additional benefits and to provide potential customers with the best available bio-based solutions on the fast-growing market in bio-based materials
Just launched - The first comprehensive multi-stakeholder market study!
More than 20 stakeholders took advantage of this unique opportunity and provided the initial funding: Bayer MaterialScience - Borealis Polyolefine - Braskem - DSM - European Bioplastics - Fischer - Ford - Omya - Plastics Europe - PURAC - Roquette - SABIC - Sofiproteol - Sulzer - Tereos Syral - Veolia (for a complete list see: www.bio-based.eu/market_study)
Over the last ten years numerous studies have demonstrated the impressive potential of bio-based products: But the political and economic framework in the EU does not support the industrial material use of biomass – this is in contrast to bioenergy and especially biofuels, which has expanded rapidly in the EU over the last ten years. The European “Innovation Union” needs to establish a level playing field for bio-based chemistry and materials in order for the EU to realize the potential of greening its process industries.

The iBIB2011 will enable industrial suppliers and customers to reach out with one another. New markets such as bio-based plastics, composites and green additives are mostly based on 'insider-knowledge' and therefore lack transparency. The iBIB2011 will help firms to find the best bio-based solutions available worldwide. 70 companies, associations, R&D from 16 countries, 136 pages.
For the fourth time, the nova-Institute (Huerth, Germany) awarded the "Biomaterial of the Year 2011" at the International Congress on Bio-based Plastics and Composites in Cologne on March 15th 2011. As in the previous year, the company Coperion GmbH (Stuttgart), a leading manufacturer of twin screw extruders, sponsored the Innovation Award.
