Compiling recommendations for the implementation of life cycle assessments for the material use of biomass koStoff

Term: 07.2015 - 12.2016

While there has been considerable political and public interest in bio-based energy and fuels for more than two decades now, only recently have bio-based materials and chemicals achieved a similar awareness. In fact, the current interest in these components as an alternative to reduce GHG emissions and save fossil resources has lead to political discussing about their equalization relative to bio-based energy and fuels.

Though a stronger equalization and subsequent political promotions are important steps towards the increased use of bio-based materials and chemicals, this cannot be realized without LCAs, proving their environmental preferability. Still for these assessments to be generally accepted, comparability and transparency are key. The latter two can be achieved by following generally accepted procedures, which are, however, currently missing.

This project aims at filling this gap by developing procedural recommendations for the life cycle assessment of bio-based materials and chemicals and the political utilization of these assessments. Particularly, the project focuses on the methodological challenges related to the assessment of bio-based materials and chemicals, and with this provides a supplement to the ILCD handbook and the ISO 14040 and 14044.
